Faye Dunaway isiJoan Crawford. A star…a legend…andia mother. The illusion of perfection.
This is the outrageous and controversial story of legendary movie star Joan Crawford (Dunaway) and her struggle with the deal roles of fading actress and tormented mother. The public Crawford was strong-willed, glamorous and admirable, but Mommie Dearest reveals the private Crawford, the woman desperate to be a mother, adopting her children when she was single and trying to survive in the devastating movie industry. The rage, the debilitating strain, and the terrifying descent into alcoholism and child abuse are graphically -- and unforgettably -- depicted in this film.

This phrase became a mantra after the release of Christina Crawford's
tell-all book based on the life of her and her brother, Christopher.
The story behind the movie is almost as juicy as the movie because it tells
how it started when Joan Crawford decided to adopt the children at the
lowest points of her career, Desperate for attention, Joan obviously felt
that the children would give her some much needed publicity. This occurred

Very Realistic Portrayal of Delicate Subject Matter - 3.25 out of 5 (8/10/2001)
The dynamics of child abuse are vividly and realistically presented in this movie.
The fading actress basically scapegoats her children for her frustrations and
failings in life. This is presented in the form of nocturnal beatings and Crawfords
need for control becomes more evident as her life spirals further out of control.
For example, the son is actually made to strap himself into bed at night. Also,
a very well casted film -- the Crawford character is very realistic looking. I found
