"Nicholson Gives A Strong, Stinging Performance. Penn's Best Film Yet." -Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
The suspect confessed to the murder, then took his own life. Case closed? Not for the homicide cop Jerry Black (Jack Nicholson). He has his own instincts about the crime. And even though he's ready to begin a gone-fishin' retirement, he promised the victim's family he'd find the killer.
Jack Nicholson (as Jerry) heads an all-star cast (Robin Wright Penn, Aaron Eckhart, Benicio Del Toro and more) in the gripping tale of a detective, driven to seek the truth...and driven into the darker reaches of his own mind by obsession. Sean Penn (who previously guided Nicholson in "The Crossing Guard") directs, shaping sharp portrayals, crisp detail and a mounting sense of dread into a thriller both unconventional and unforgettable.

this pledge shines - 3.75 out of 5 (6/18/2001)
THE PLEDGE is at first glance, less than it would seem. The box art promises
a simple movie about a murder, a promise and a cop who wants to see it
solved at all costs.
But, when you actually get into the movie (which is within minutes) you see
that this is the world of Sean Penn, and he has proven himself to quite the
adept director. This is the second time he has worked with Jack Nicholson
(the first was the CROSSING GUARD) and he weaves a tale that darkens the
lines between hero and

an underated, generally decent achievement in fim making - 3 out of 5 (6/19/2002)
The Pledge is not your standard detective thriller, far from it. Admitedly the film itself is rather slow and long winded, which many viewers may find tedious. However, the cast, especially Nicholson, are all on top form, with supporting roles fro Benicio Del Toro and Robin Wright (Penn). If you are willing to be patient and give the film a chance, you will find the truly ironic and ideed tragic ending most rewarding.

Another Fine Jack Nicholson Performance - 4 out of 5 (1/1/2002)
If you're expecting a fast paced action adventure, forget it. This isn't the movie.
The Pledge with Jack Nicholson is a subtle, deliberately measured thriller where Jack (Jerry Black) plays a newly retired Reno cop who tracks an (as yet) unknown serial killer in the high country of Nevada.
Jack is so methodical, he even buys a run-down gas station -- and becomes its proprietor -- waiting patiently for the slayer to strike again; stalking his prey for months, long after he has ident

Get a grip.... - 3 out of 5 (9/15/2001)
The Pledge is the most boring movie I ve seen in a long time.I bought this dvd hoping to find a good detective story but instead I found slow, boring Jack Nicholson that should be avoided.
I wont go into much detail but believe me this is not a thriller nor a detective story. It is a story about a man who is retired and doing this investigation of a murder for fun...I feel it that way...
No extras...Except a thriller.I dont get why this movie is more expensive that some other ones which ar
