Empire Review Quills thrills me - 4.5 out of 5  (4/30/2001) The general consensus is that the Academy really screwed up at this years Oscar's. I have to agree with that because while GLADIATOR was a fine movie, so many others eclipsed it in the past year. QUILLS is one of those films. If you don't believe me then stop and consider this! How many movies could make a hero out of the Marquis De Sade? Geoffrey Rush plays the Marquis and this is the performance of his career! The Marquis was French author who, because of his remarkably scandalous life, spent more than 27 years in prison and from his cell witnessed more than 1,800 beheading's.
