Synopsis
This wicked adaptation of the Octave Mirbeau novel is classic Luis Bunuel. Jeanne Moreau is Celestine, a beautiful Parisian domestic who, upon arrival at her new job at an estate in provincial 1930s France, entrenches herself in sexual hypocrisy and scandal with Bunuel regular Michel Piccoli as her philandering employer. Filmed in luxurious black-and-white Franscope, Diary Of A Chambermaid is a raw-edged tangle of fetishism and murder -- and a scathing look at the burgeoning French fascism of the era.

DIARY OF A CHAMBERMAID - 3 out of 5  (6/19/2002)
Jean Moreau is one of the great movie stars of the 20th Century and Luis Bunuel's DIARY OF A CHAMBERMAID (1964) is one of her best films and the second version of the 1900 Octave Mirbeau novel. The 1946 Jean Renoir film came first. She plays Celestine, a new arrival among the servants in the home of a rich Monteli family in 1930s France. The wife (Francoise Lugange) is strict, demanding and picky, while the husband (Michel Piccoli) is even worse. They drive their neighbor crazy and turn   more >>
