A highly decorated, retired U.S. Marine general (Ed Harris) seizes a stockpile of chemical weapons and takes over Alcatraz, with 81 tourists as hostages on the San Francisco Bay isle. His demand: Restitution to families of soldiers who died in covert operations. The response: An elite Navy SEAL team, with support from an FBI chemical warfare expert (Nicolas Cage) and a former Alcatraz escapee (Sean Connery), is assembled to penetrate the terrorists' defenses on the island and neutralize the threat before time runs out. The result: A fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat thriller with a first-rate cast, directed by Michael Bay and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer.

I had already seen the movie twice before and really enjoyed it, so what's a third viewing? What I was really interested in though were the extra features that have become the staple for every Criterion DVD, and this release doesn't disappoint. But, before I get to the extras, let me summarize the film for those that have never seen it.

Ed Harris and Sean Connery can't save this movie - 2.75 out of 5 (3/27/2002)
What a waste of talent. But then, look what Bay and Bruckheimer have done with other great actor ensembles, like Con Air, Armageddon, even Pearl Harbor. If you like a barrage of loud fireballs and lame dialog sprinkled in between, you will enjoy this movie. If you've seen one of their pictures, you really have seen them all. But Bruckheimer did do a good job in producing Black Hawk Down. If you want action, make a trip to the theater now and/or wait till that one comes out on DVD.

criterion at its best - 5 out of 5 (12/14/2001)
this is so far hands down my favorite dvd. it's picture is as good as superbit and the extras are all neatly on the second disk. one of the best movies presented the way it was meant to be.
