Stanley Kubrick's celebrated black comedy classic about an "accidental" nuclear attack was nominated for four 1964 Academy Awards. Created during a time when the paranoia of the Cold War was at its peak, the film still seems surprisingly relevant today. Convinced the Commies are polluting America's "precious bodily fluids," a crazed General (Sterling Hayden) orders a surprise nuclear air strike on the USSR. His aide Captain Mandrake (Peter Sellers) furiously attempts to figure out a recall code to stop the bombing. Meanwhile, the U.S. President (Sellers again) gets on the hot line to convince the drunken Soviet premier that the impending attack is a silly mistake, while the President's advisor (and ex-Nazi scientist) Dr. Strangelove (Sellers once more) confirms the existence of the dreaded Doomsday Machine -- a new secret Soviet retaliatory device guaranteed to end the human race once and for all!

Dark comedy about nuclear bombs and the end of the world - 4 out of 5 (8/6/2003)
I grew up in the late fifties, early sixties. As such, I was part of the cold war generation that learned in school to 'duck and cover', that is hide under the quarter inch plywood desk that was supposed to protect us from the devastation of a hydrogen bomb. The Cuban missile crisis was fresh, even in the mind of a child. It was this political climate that generated the H-Bomb movie genre. On the serious side was Fail Safe; the satirical response was Doctor Strangelove or How I learned to Stop W

Best Cinematic Satire of Nuclear Age - 4.25 out of 5 (8/5/2003)
Great film need I say more. Sellers plays three roles (US president, Dr, Stranelove- former Nazi, and an RAF officer). One of the best films that came out of the cold war.

Watch Once, Wait A While, Then Watch Again ... - 4.5 out of 5 (4/6/2002)
The first time I saw this film I just didn't get it. A few years went by and my humour refined itself a little. Although I can still have a good laugh at "low-brow" comedy, Strangelove has really moved up the ladder for me. There are many satires out there that are plain dull, but this one has perfect performances all round. Seller is a triumph, and George C Scott turns in a fantastic comic performance. I find the look of this film incredible. The Black & White adds to the atmosphere, and

The greatest black comdey in film history gets the DVD treatment it deserves. - 4.75 out of 5 (2/18/2002)
Dr. Strangelove is one of the funniest, most imaginative movies ever made, with hilarious performances by George C. Scott and Peter Sellers. though it is a comedy, the serious aspects of war and nuclear warfare are evident and shine right through. this is (i think) kubrick's only comdey and it truly is one of his masterpieces (as well as A Clockwork Orange and 2001). a truly great movie and must be owned by anyone with a dvd player, film buffs, and Stanley Kubrick fans.
