"One Of The Year's Best Films." -The Hollywood Reporter
Katharine Hepburn delivers an "amazing" (Variety), Oscar®-winning performance "that must be seen to be believed" (Boxoffice) in this "dazzling" (Los Angeles Times) all-star film that is not to be missed.
Behind the great stone walls of an English castle, the world's most powerful empire is in crisis. Three sons struggle to win their father's favor - as well as his crown. King Henry II (Peter O'Toole) and his queen, Eleanor (Hepburn), engage in a battle of royal wits that pits elder son Richard (Anthony Hopkins) against his brothers, while the cunning King Philip of France (Timothy Dalton) takes advantage of the internal fracturing in his bid to destroy their kingdom.

LION IN WINTER - 2.5 out of 5 (5/31/2002)
After Peter O'Toole's all-time triumph in 1962's LAWRENCE OF ARABIA,
every major studio and production company in the movie business did

whether O'Toole was in it or not. Anthony Harvey's THE LION IN WINTER
(1968) is one of the best films to come out of those efforts.
O'Toole is joined by Katharine Hepburn in a great performance that got
her an Oscar. Future James Bond Timothy Dalton and Anthony Hopkins
made their feat

Tour de Force - 3.5 out of 5 (11/3/2003)
Stellar performances by each of these distinguished leading actors with superior supporting cast. The technical aspects of the disc need the Criterion touch and features expanded on the historical aspects as well as perspectives on the players.

Well-cast & well-played - 3.25 out of 5 (10/1/2003)
A great film potraying the struggle of one of England's greatest empire builders who must choose one of his three very imperfect sons to be his heir. The choice dogs him as the three are played by two non-neutral figures: their mother and the King of France. Henry (O'Toole) is more than a match for either of them, but none of the sons can withstand temptation. His legacy will fall, even at the moment of his greatest triumphs.
