James Stewart stars with Farley Granger and John Dall in a highly-charged thriller inspired by the real-life Leopold-Loeb murder case. Granger and Dall give riveting performances as two friends who strangle a classmate for intellectual thrills, then proceed to throw a party for the victim's family and friends - with the body stuffed inside the trunk they use for a buffet table. As the killers turn the conversation to committing the "perfect murder", their former teacher (Stewart) becomes increasingly suspicious. Before the night is over, the professor will discover how brutally his students have turned his academic theories into chilling reality in Hitchcock's spellbinding excursion into the macabre.

Introducing Mr. Hitchcock ... - 3.75 out of 5 (1/5/2003)
I would say ROPE is a fine film to introduce a newcomer to the world of Alfred Hitchcock. It's well paced, It showcases a fine performance by John Dall and it has the added interest of running 'continuously', without intentional cuts.
Slightly different material for James Stewart.
Set design and direction is brilliant. Often cited as a minor Hitchcock film, this one (his first in colour) holds up well.

Rope delivers on every level - 4.5 out of 5 (10/18/2001)
Farley Granger & Jimmy Stewart play thier parts great in this suspenceful thriller. This movie takes place just in one area. Yea you hear me right, this movie only takes place in a apartment room. Jimmy Stewart is the teacher of the 2 boys that are having the party, and that's when things get interesting. Rope is a great hitchcock film, and this film really made me appreciate classic films, and all hitchcock films. I would suggest this or any other hitchcock films to anyone curoius.

Excellent commentary on a disturbing social trend - 3.5 out of 5 (4/29/2001)
ROPE is a curious experiment: a film shot in real time, with only one "cut" in the action--see if you can spot it. More than that, it is the best commentary on the Leopold and Loeb murder case that was ever made. James Stewart's performance as the professor who repents of his ivory-tower theories when he sees their horrifying practice is alone worth the price of this title. View it now--before such "true tests of the superior intellect" as is depicted in it become commonplace.
