In Every War There Is A Battle To End All Battles.
Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda and Robert Mitchum lead an all-star cast in this breathtaking dramatization of the heroic sea battle that became the turning point in the Pacific during World War II.
The Battle of Midway sounded its furious thunder in June 1942, only six months after the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor. Just when it seemed that nothing could stop the Japanese expansion in the Pacific, a small US Navy task force came to the rescue, defeating one of Japan's largest fleets headed for the strategically located Midway Island.
Integrating personal stories and accounts of the individual courage and sacrifieces of the men involved, Midway includes actual war footage shot by navy photographers and cameras mounted on fighter planes, giving a powerful sense of reality to this thrilling, true story..

Great Film Despite Flaws - 3.25 out of 5 (5/7/2000)
I understand where the critics come from when they fault "Midway." Yes, the fictional subplot involving Charlton Heston and his son's Japanese girlfriend smacks of an unwarranted PC intrusion ("Let's make a statement about the terrible treatment of the Nisei while we're at it!"). Yes, the sparseness of the budget shows up in the inconsistent WWII combat footage and the reuse of stock battle scenes from "Tora! Tora! Tora!". And I also fault the filmmakers for not having the Japanese speak the

Mono sountrack ??? - 2 out of 5 (9/6/1998)
When this movie was originally released it was hyped for it's "SENSAROUND" Soundtrack. Why in the heck did Universal release this disc with a mono soundtrack??? NO EXCUSES!!! The video transfer is actually a pretty good, but the fact that you only get sound from your center speaker is a real distaraction.
As for the movie itself, well it's a poorly edited mess. Embarrassing performances by major stars are intercut with stock footage of crashing fighter planes and cheesy rear projection cockp

Solid Transfer of a Good Film - 3 out of 5 (8/9/1998)
Midway proves that older films can be transferred well to DVD. The colors are more vivid than any presentation I've ever seen of this movie. The 2.35:1 aspect ratio displayed the film the way director Jack Smight intended it to be seen. The sound is crisp, though it's in Dolby Digital mono. Aside from the occasional scratches in the vintage WWII film used in some battle scenes, the transfer was solid. If you liked the movie Midway, then the DVD is a must have.
