Synopsis Nick Nolte stars in this brutally honest entertainment about one man's rebellion against the bureaucratic, manipulative world of professional football. Empire Review Go Long! - 3.5 out of 5  (1/22/2001) "North Dallas Forty" is one of those films about the sport of football that nobody involved with the sport wanted us to see. When it was released originally in 1979, critics were harsh on it, saying it was boundless and it showed the harsh side of football. That probably is why years later, the film is considered such a great one.
