In the 1970s, Woody Allen made a name for himself as a comic genius, only rivaled by Mel Brooks. By the 1980s, Brooks ran out of things to do with genres, then Allen decided he was going to try to be an American Ingmar Bergman more often! Occasionally, Allen goes back to comedy and SMALL TIME CROOKS is his first outing since the underrated MANHATTAN MURDER MYSTERY (1993) to do so.
