In 18th-century France, a cruel and calculating playboy, Valmont, makes a malicious wager with the equally wicked Madame de Merteuil: Valmont must dishonor the married Madame de Tourvel by sleeping with her. If Valmont succeeds, he gets the privilege of Merteuil's bed as well. But when Valmont sets out on his task, the unexpected happens--he falls in love with Tourvel! And now Merteuil will stop at nothing to destroy Valmont's newfound passion.

Very good transfer - 3.75 out of 5 (10/1/2002)
I waited for a long for this DVD's release. The transfer is superb and the audio very nicely serves the beautiful music.
As opposed to other opinions, I have to admit that Valmont arrives ex-aequo with the equally superb "Dangerous Liaisons" starring Glenn Close and John Malkovich. Both movies treat the story with a different "pizzaz". The latter is rather gloom and has a sense of dark destiny in the making. "Valmont" is more playful in its treatment. But both movies are equally enjoyable f

Colin Firth at the top of his game - 3.75 out of 5 (9/19/2002)
Valmont is the finest screen version of Dangerous Liasons to date. Colin Firth plays the title role as the quintessential French aristocrat, always dressed superbly, well skilled in walking, speaking, duelling, writing flowery letters and court dancing. In addition to all of this, Valmont is a rake of the highest persuasion, surpassing even Don Juan and Tom Jones.
