They cameito play ball. They stayedito make history.
In 1945, the world of baseball is divided between the Majors and the Negro League -- but the time has come for change. One team will be the first to sign a black player.
Only one player will be the first to take the field. The Brooklyn Dodgers want to make the deal that will make history. But the man they choose will have to be more than a great player -- he has to have the charisma of a star. It soon comes down to three powerful and extraordinary players: legendary pitcher Satchel Paige (Delroy Lindo); the greatest hitter in baseball Josh Gibson (Mykelti Williamson); and a rookie by the name of Jackie Robinson (Blair Underwood). Three players -- three friends -- three champions. Together they are unbeatable -- but only one will cross the home plate into history.

So much missing - 3.75 out of 5 (2/4/2001)
With this kind of movie there could so much more on the DVD. Commentary and deleted scenes aside, short historical documentary-type features would fit in well. An actual look at the less-widely know two--Gibson and Paige. They could do a lot more to add to the features. Oh yeah, the movie is great.
