Empire Review I'm on the grift! - 4 out of 5  (2/1/2001) Jim Thompson wrote "The Grifters" as a 1950's novel. Donald E. Westlake wrote the screenplay. Martin Scorsese produced the film and Stephen Frears directed it. All in all, I can't think of a much better pedigree for this hard luck tale of conmen gone wrong. The whole film slips into the bracket of "Film-Newer" because it looks like it would have perfectly at home in black and white also. This is the story of three conmen. Roy (John Cusack) is our hero. There's not much to like about the main characters; yet, I find myself inextricably drawn to this movie. I have to attribute this to the story and the powerful acting. The video and audio are passable; however, the features presented an innovation, that I'd like to see other DVD makers utilize. Most of the time, the cast and crew notes are so dull, I don't even bother. But this DVD actually reads the notes out loud. With three top actors, Anjelica Huston, Annette Bening and John Cusack, Frears invites us to a non-stop ride to hell. Caught between his mother and his girl-friend, John Cusack will have a hard time to survive and become a man. You can almost touch the hate those two women feel for each other.
