Artist Eben Adams (Joseph Cotton) has never been able to impress influential art dealer Henry Matthews with his work, until he meets a schoolgirl in Central Park named Jennie (Jennifer Jones). There is a mystical quality about Jennie, and she intrigues him with the way she chats on about things that happened years ago. When Eben sketches Jennie, it shows more expression and emotion than anything else he has ever done. But before he knows it, Jennie is gone.
Intrigued by her enigmatic nature, Eben searches for Jennie. When he finds her, she seems to have aged several years, and as happened in their first meeting, Jennie disappears as soon as Eben paints her portrait. As the artist again searches for this mysterious young woman, one of the most unusual and unforgettable love stories ever unfolds.
