Set in 1943, this explosive epic centers on Corporal Steiner (James Coburn), an accomplished but war-weary combat veteran leading a group of German soldiers on the Russian Front. Steiner's authority comes under attack when Captain Stransky (Maximilian Schell of Deep Impact) takes over the command of his troops. A Prussian aristocrat, Stransky has one goal in mind: to win the coveted Iron Cross, Germany's highest medal, at any cost.

Very bad presentation of a very good movie. - 2.5 out of 5 (4/6/2004)
Sam Peckinpahs only war movie (unless you count THE WILD BUNCH) was also one of the most realistic ever made. Filmed in Yugoslavia using authentic WW 2 armor & weapons it had that tight sense of danger/despair missing in so many war movies. The biggest problem with this DVD is that Hens Tooth Video has put out a really CRAPPY presentation! Honestly, it looks no better then a washed out VHS tape plus it is pan & scan! Don't buy this DVD unless you are desperate. Hopefully in the near future a maj

Highly Realistic WWII Small Unit Action Film - 3.5 out of 5 (9/13/2000)
One of the very best small unit action films. James Colburn plays the part of a Nazi Sgt. on the collasping Russian front. Authentic Soviet T-34 tanks move against and overrun German infantry positions in an industrial setting. Overan and bypassed German unit moves back to the front lines through Russian positions. Essentially a picture of universal military values of duty and the class distinctions of officer and enlisted. Action filled as Saving Private Ryan but less of a gorefest.
