smashing... - 5 out of 5 (8/31/2004)
anyone who who isn't completely enchanted by this movie must be "thicker than a whale omelette", to quote a (fictional) eminent personage. i won't be dull and give out any story details (which any 5th grader could do with any movie) but will say that in its acting and script, it's more subtle and telling about art, love, class and wit than a major studio backed movie has any right to be. sure it's dated in places, and the score isn's absolutely top tier, but seen in the right light it's cracking

A fine script AND Olivier, yet this DVD is only OK - 2.25 out of 5 (8/24/1998)
I bought this DVD only because it was a Laurence Olivier film I'd never seen. While I was entertained by the film, I was appaled by it's treatment on DVD. For one, the 'widescreen' transfer seems hardly that at all, with only VERY small black bands at the top and bottom, both of which aren't even the same size. Other than that, the video quality is fair, but not much better than a good VHS copy. The audio is terrbile. I had to turn my sound system ALL THE WAY UP just to hear the fast and furious
