They neededia country that was big enoughifor both of their dreams.
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman star in this critically-acclaimed romantic adventure from director Ron Howard. This breathtaking epic opens on the west coast of Ireland, 1892. Joseph Donnely (Cruise), a poor tenant farmer, is determined to bring justice to an oppressive landlord. Instead, he finds himself accompanying the landlord's daughter, Shannon (Kidman), to America in a quest for land.
Arriving in Boston, Joseph finds a place for them to live while proving an natural at bare-fisted boxing. But his triumph is short-lived as he and Shannon are thrown out into the bitter cold. Their bickering eventually reveals their true feelings for each other, just as they are separated by a grim turn of events.
Joseph sets off for work on the railroad, until a passing wagon train reminds him of his original goal to possess his own land. Preparing to stake his claim in the new territory, he runs into Shannon, who is unhappily reunited with her former finacé. In the excitement of the Oklahoma land rush, they realize their dreams of land and life together.

Great film deserves more on DVD - 3.5 out of 5 (4/12/1999)
The film is shot beautifully. Normally, I don't like love stories but I like this because there is some humor in it. The story is touching and the characters are nice. The music is also good. A genuenly pleasing film
Such a good film deserves more then average sound, blurry video, and only a trailer for extra features. Universal should have gone all out for Ron Howard but they didn't, too bad.
A pleasing film, reccommended.

Cheap Tranfer - 2 out of 5 (8/27/1998)
How could a movie film in super 70mm look so bad on DVD. This is the last time I will ever buy a disc released from Universal based soely on the title. Looks like another cheap outdated transfer directly from LD. May as well save your money and watch this movie on VHS.

Excellent Movie - somewhat dissappointed with transfer... - 3.25 out of 5 (7/13/1998)
The story and acting are excellent - the photography
is great. All in all a pretty good movie.
The transfer is not as 'crisp' as I would have liked.
This detracted from the enjoyment of the photography.
Nothing really bad - just not as 'crystal clear' as
I've seen with some other movies
My sound system isn't up to where I would feel capable
of rating the soundtrack, however, it sounded good
to me.
Some interesting information in the production notes.
All in all - I'm happy to
