"Heartwarming [and] Priceless. A Masterpiece." -Boxoffice
It's the hope that sustains the spirit of every GI: the dream of the day when he will finally return home. For three WWII veterans, the day has arrived. But for each man, the dream is about to become a nightmare. Captain Fred Derry (Dana Andrews) is returning to a loveless marriage; Sergeant Al Stephenson (Fredric March) is a stranger to a family that's grown up without him; and young sailor Homer Parrish (Harold Russell) is tormented by the loss of his hands. Can these three men find the courage to rebuild their world? Or are the best years of their lives a thing of the past?
Featuring a brilliant cast that includes Myrna Loy and Virginia Mayo, this postwar classic garnered seven Oscars, including Best Picture. Heart-wrenching, touching and "filled with emotional dynamite" (The Hollywood Reporter), it remains "one of the best films about war veterans ever made" (American Movie Classics Magazine).

A grand patriotic academy award winning classic. A good pick for the holidays! - 2.75 out of 5 (12/4/2002)
At the end of WWII many American GIs were returning home with hopes of beginning their pre-war lives anew. However, returning to civilian life was not as easy as many had dreamed. They had trouble fitting back into society, finding good jobs and dealing with the emotions that the war and the homecoming brought them. At this time, film producer Samuel Goldwyn read an article dealing with these problems. He realized millions of Americans were dealing with the same problems and the wheels began

Dana Andrews the real star of this classic - 3.25 out of 5 (9/24/2004)
Great American film milestone, and in many ways is a true, realistic portrait of three different men coming back after WWII.
For all the raving about Fredric March's and Harold Russell's Oscar-winning performances (they are great), it's Dana Andrews who has the best part and does the very best job in the picture. In my opinion, HE should have been nominated and won for Best Actor...his part is just as big as March's is, and it's by far the most difficult acting job.
