"An edge-of-your-seat thriller!" - Newsweek
The Insider recounts the chain of events that pitted an ordinary man against the tobacco industry, and dragged two people into the fight of their lives.
Academy Award Winner Al Pacino (Any Given Sunday, The Devil's Advocate) gives a powerful performance as veteran 60 Minutes producer Lowell Bergman, and Russell Crowe (L.A. Confidential, Mystery, Alaska) co-stars as the ultimate insider, former tobacco executive Dr. Jeffery Wigand. When Wigand is fired by his employer -- one of the largest tobacco companies in America -- he agrees to become a paid consultant for a story Bergman is working on regarding alleged unethical practices within the tobacco industry. But what begins as a temporary alliance leads to a lengthy battle for both men to save their reputations, and much, much more.
As they soon find out, Corporate America will use all legal means at their disposal to save a billion-dollar-a-year habit. And as the corporate giants soon find out, Bergman and Wigand are honorable men, driven to smoke out the evidence.
Also starring Christopher Plummer (Malcolm X) as anchor Mike Wallace and Gina Gershon (Face/Off), The Insider will chill you with its cold, hard edge -- and thrill you with its unbelievable twists and turns.

A fantastic thriller - 4 out of 5 (4/24/2000)
"The Insider" isn't the kind of movie you want to start at 11:30 on a school night.
I give this bit of helpful information based on experience.
The movie is so enthralling that you barely have time to register that you have been watching it for two hours with one to go and you have to go to bed soon.
Russell Crowe plays Dr. Jeffrey Wigand. The movie begins as he is losing his job from a high-level tobacco company. Jeffrey is torn because he has grown used to a certain lifestyle and

How good is this film? - 4.5 out of 5 (7/4/2000)
Totally snubbed at the oscars (Daytime Soap opera / Lolita rip off American Beauty won Best Picture - go figure), this film remains one of the finest films of the last 12 months. An absolute master class in screenwriting, acting and direction (Crowe, Pacino and Mann all take a bow)! Buy this DVD now. The extras are okay, but the film more than makes up for it. Oh, and don't be fooled by the packaging - there is no audio commentary from Crowe and Pacino.

Excellent Achievement - 4.25 out of 5 (5/20/2000)
The thing that really made this film great, besides the outstanding performances, was the fact that it was a story that had to be told. Like many other films that are so called "edge of your seat" thrillers,The Insider is nothing short of just that. When you think about it,the tabacco industry has been ruleing many americans lives for years. So when someone has the guts to actually take them on,the story has to be told. This is the best film I have seen in years,it is extremely involving and
