A gallery of high-living lowflies will stop at nothing to get their sweaty hands on a jewel-encrusted falcon. Detective Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart) wants to find out why - and who;ll take the fall. This third screen version of Dashiell Hammett's novel is a film of firsts: John Huston's directorial debut, rotund Sydney Greenstreet's screen debut, film history's first film noir and Bogart's break through role after years as a Warner contract player.
An all-star cast (including Greenstreet, Mary Astor, Pete Lorre and Elisha Cook Jr.) join Bogart in this crisply written sizzler that placed in the top quarter of the American Film Institute's 100 Greatest American Films list. Many say it's the best detective drama ever. Each time you see it, you'll find it hard to disagree.

one of the best in film noir - 3 out of 5 (10/23/2003)
a classic Bogie. Plot twists and turns and who do you trust. The supporting cast is solid gold. The question is, is the bird gold or lead??

Great Film in Need of Restoration - 3.75 out of 5 (12/26/2002)
I love this movie, which helped to launch and define the hard boiled film noir era. If you are looking at this review, you already know what the movie is about, so I will focus on the DVD.
The quality of the picture ranges from quite good in spots to quite bad in others. It is, in other words, in need of the sort of restoration that Criterion does. In places, there is noticeable dirt, scratches, and distorted imaging. On the other hand, the sound is uniformly quite good for a film of it
