BIRTH OF A MYTH - 4.75 out of 5 (2/1/2000)
For years, I've avoided director François Truffaut's movies. I don't know exactly why. I was perhaps, like many european movie lovers, intimately convinced that Cinema = Hollywood. Or was it maybe the unanimous critical adoration surrounding this director ?
So it's really with a little reluctance that I have decided to take a look at THE 400 BLOWS, presented by Criterion. First movie of the director, THE 400 BLOWS, shot in b&w, presents the first adventures of Antoine Doinel, played by a luna

A Staple In The Cinema. - 4.25 out of 5 (12/27/1998)
This film is breathtaking, beautiful, glorious, and just plain great. The DVD is phat, with insightful commentary, a trailer, and a beautiful transfer. The thing I don't get is the splices in the film that happen so frequently. Criterion shows you in a DVD menu how they restored some of the worst parts of the picture, but a lot of flaws remain. It still looks fabulous for being 40 years old.

Could be Criterion's best DVD to date - 5 out of 5 (11/28/1998)
I'll hand it to Criterion - they scored a home run
here. 400 Blows is a foundation for any review of
film history, and they have provided a wonderful transfer.
Few films can be said to be truly beautiful to watch - this
is one of them. Grab a copy and prepare to be awestruck.
If you're interested in exploring non-American cinema
(which you really should do), then this is a great starting point.
You will not be disappointed.
