Wes Anderson's dazzling sophomore effort is equal parts coming-of-age story, French New Wave homage and screwball comedy. Tenth grader Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman) is Rushmore Academy's most extracurricular student-and its least scholarly. He faces expulsion and enters into unlikely friendships with both a lovely first-grade teacher (Olivia Williams) and a melancholy self-made millionaire (Bill Murray). Set to a soundtrack of classic British Invasion tunes, Rushmore defies categorization even as it captures the pain and exuberance of adolescence with wit, emotional depth, and cinematic panache. Criterion is proud to present 1998's most acclaimed film in a Director Approved special edition.

witty and charming - 5 out of 5 (3/27/2002)
Jason Schwartzman may pigeonhole himself with his great performance, much like the brat-packers of the John Hughes movies. I don't think I've ever rooted so much for an underdog before, or laughed so hard while doing so. Max Fischer must be the coolest dork ever. This movie is full of joy and quirky humor that warms the heart throughout. At the end you should be feeling swell, and catching yourself repeating any number of its quotable phrases. The extras are great and make the Criterion much

An incredible movie gets a deserved DVD treatment. - 5 out of 5 (8/27/2001)
Although misunderstood by some, Rushmore is one incredible movie. the acting is great all across the board, especially with Olivia Williams as elementary teacher Rosemary Cross, and with Bill Murray in possibly his greatest role ever as a miserable, dissatisfied steel tycoon. The story is simple: there is a love triangle and two would-be friends are pitted against each other by their love for a woman. It is the amazing characters that bring Rushmore to life, and let the movie be more than just a

The First Great Disc of the New Millenium.............. - 5 out of 5 (2/3/2000)
I remember first viewing "Rushmore" at the theater last March. Never in such a long time had a film made me smile throughout an entire viewing. The film has an enormous amount of laughs, but it also has loads of heart and a gentle quality in its story. It's a rare comedy, who's pacing and unfolding of it's story is 100% perfect.
The film's central character, Max Fischer(Jason Schwartzman), is an eccentric 15 year old student who attends Rushmore Academy. While he succeeds in his extricurricul
