Back On The Beat In Slagtown...

It’s the best television series you’ve probably never heard of. If the phrase “Alien Nation” only conjures up images of that lackluster theatrical film featuring James Caan and Mandy Patinkin, you’re in for a surprise. Airing on FOX during the 1989-1990 TV series and one of the first hour-long dramas the network ever produced, Alien Nation tackled such serious subjects as racism, bigotry, religion and sexism in episodes that were noted both for their emotionalism and for their “fish out of water” humor.

Despite building a loyal fan base, pulling in decent ratings, and being adored by the critics, Alien Nation’s television life was short – lasting only one season. The outcry over it’s cancellation was so strong, however, that FOX actually publicly apologized for axing the show. The network also went on to green light a series of five made-for-TV movies that brought both the series and characters back in the years between 1994 and 1997.

Now, for the first time, FOX is releasing the first and only season of Alien Nation on DVD, and to mark the occasion, DVD Empire is proud to bring back Alien Nation’s main players for a series of brand-new exclusive interviews about their memories of the show (see links at the top of this page). We’ve also put together an episode guide to remind fans of the wonderful episodes that aired in Season One, and give new viewers a glimpse into what to expect on the new DVDs.

Alien Nation: The Series

That was the scene in California’s Mojave Desert five years ago...our historic first view of the Newcomers’ ship. Theirs was a slave ship, carrying a quarter million beings bred to adapt and labor in any environment. But they’ve washed ashore on Earth, with no way to get back to where they came from...and in the last five years the Newcomers have become the latest addition to the population of Los Angeles...

Pilot – In the first episode of the show, we get our first glimpse of the Francisco family as they move into a new home and try to deal with the racism around them. We also get a look at George’s work life and he and partner Matthew Sikes begin to address the differences between them...and begin a friendship that will define both of them.

Fountain Of Youth – Matt learns that an old high school buddy who has become a doctor may be using Newcomers to develop a drug that will take years off the human lifespan.

Little Lamb Lost – Matt befriends a prostitute who winds up murdered in his apartment and has to track down the killers. Meanwhile, George’s son, Buck must come to terms with a horrible crime he has committed.

Fifteen With Wanda – Matt and George find themselves protecting a government witness, while both have family problems of their own: George dealing with his teenage son; and Matt coping with his rebellious daughter.

The Take Over – With most of the officers called out to break up a nearby riot, George is left to defend an empty precinct against a gang of thugs...and against his own brainwashed wife, Susan – who is ordered to kill him.

The First Cigar – Desperate to try and make ends meet, George takes a loan from a local store owner...only to discover that she has secrets of her own – secrets that recall George’s days aboard the spaceship prior to coming to Earth.

Night Of The Screams – It’s Halloween, and someone is killing Newcomers. It’s up to George and Matt to solve the crime, and stop the murderer before he strikes again.

Contact – The arrival of the Newcomers on Earth has reinvigorated the search for extraterrestrial life. But when one scientist’s discovery results in his death, George and Matt must find out who killed him...and what secret was so important that it cost him his life.

Three To Tango – George and Susan decide to add a third child to their family...but for the Newcomers, it take three to conceive a baby!

The Game – George must deal with his past on the spaceship, as he finds himself once again a participant in a deadly “Russian roulette”-type game – where the losers pays with their life!

Chains Of Love – A powerful drug called “sardinak” makes whomever ingests it fall instantly in love with the next person they see. That’s bad news for Matt Sikes, as a male newcomer makes eyes at him after taking the drug!

The Red Room – Matt and George must deal with the F.B.I. when they are taken off a murder case they have been investigating. The two cops disobey orders to uncover the truth of what the government is trying to hide.

The Spirit Of ’95 – Will the Newcomers be given the right to vote? Susan and Buck have joined the fight to get the law passed, but human “Purists” will do anything to make sure it never happens.

Generation To Generation – A sacred Newcomer artifact has been discovered, but sold at an auction. When the purchaser winds up dead and the artifact missing, George becomes determined to find it and return it to his people.

Eyewitness News – George becomes the focus of a story by the local news affiliate, and is being followed around with cameras as he performs his daily duties. But the attention changes George’s personality, and it’s up to those closest to him to remind him what is most important in his life.

Partners – George is witness to a mob hit, and finds himself being framed in an attempt to discredit him before he can testify. It’s up to Matt to prove George is innocent.

Real Men – George goes into premature labor, and it’s up to Matt to deliver the baby!

Crossing The Line – A serial killer who was responsible for a death when Matt was a rookie cop has resurfaced...put in the same situation again, can Matt stop him this time and put his personal demons to rest in the process? One of the series’ best episodes!

Rebirth – Matt is electrocuted and pronounced legally dead before he is miraculously brought back to life. Was it science that saved him, or a mysterious Newcomer cult?

Gimme Gimme – George invests in a new fabric called “Nu-Knit” that is so strong it can stop bullets. But when the creator is murdered, George and Matt discover the real truth behind the miracle material.

The Touch – Cathy comes in contact with a young boy she knew from the spaceship – a boy who is suffering deep emotional problems from the abuse he has suffered.

Green Eyes – In the series finale, George and Matt come to a crossroads in their relationship, while the “Purists” have perfected a drug that can kill Newcomers...a poison that will put the very lives of the Francisco family in danger.

Alien Nation On DVD

In addition to the episodes listed above, the DVD release of Alien Nation will also include a commentary track by Ken Johnson on the pilot episode, as well as a Behind The Scenes featurette. Sadly, FOX has not included the five made-for-TV telefilms in this release, the first of which resolves the cliffhanger upon which Season One ends. Fortunately, should the Season One set sell well, FOX intends to release the telefilms – either separately or possibly as part of a second boxed set.

Highly entertaining and still socially relevant over 15 years later, Alien Nation remains one of the true landmark television series of our time, and a worthy addition to any DVD library!
