Any collection of science-fiction and/or fantasy titles on DVD has to begin with the best, so it’s perhaps no surprise that our list starts off with the
Star Wars Trilogy and
The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy. Forget the more recent Star Wars movies,
George Lucas original trifecta is where it’s all at, and the DVD releases of the film are top-notch. When it comes to
The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, we highly recommend picking up the
Extended Edition versions over the
theatrical ones. Each of the
Extended Editions are available separately, or in a convenient 3-Pack.
Looking for other sci-fi/fantasy trilogies that are worth your DVD dollar? The
Back To The Future Trilogy is certainly worth your viewing time, containing all three films and a nice selection of bonus features. And although the sequels never lived up to the original, no serious student of sci-fi will want his or her library to be without
The Ultimate Matrix Collection, the truly definitive version of all three flicks, with enough material to fill up 10 DVDs! If trilogies just aren’t enough, check out the
Alien Quadrilogy, a 9-disc opus to that science-fiction series.
Looking for something a little more “classic”? Well how about picking up arguably the best science-fiction movie ever made: Robert Wise’s
The Day The Earth Stood Still. The story of benevolent aliens that visit Earth only to have their offerings of peace be misinterpreted as hostility, it’s still one of the most powerful movies ever made, despite the aged special effects. Impress your friends with your taste in film, and puzzle them with your chants of “Klatu Barada Nikto”!
Another classic that no DVD shelf should be without is
Planet Of The Apes, that classic
Charlton Heston visitation to a world where “apes evolved from men”. It’s available in a great 35th Anniversary version, or if you’re looking to pick up all of the sequels, check out the
Evolution boxed set.
Rounding out our must-have list are two fan favorites: the
Spielberg classic
E.T. and
James Cameron’s
Terminator 2.
