A Film By Alexander Sokurov
In 1994, filmmaker Alexander Sokurov (Russian Ark, Mother and Son) journeyed to the desolate but dangerous Tajikistan-Afghanistan border to make a film about the Russian soldiers who were stationed there. Embedded with the troops for months, Sorurov emerged with a unique perspective on the human condition in an overwhelming environment.
Virtually abandoned on the frontiers of the ruined Russian empire, the soldiers are left to face an omnipresent yet invisible enemy. SPIRITUAL VOICES takes its pace from the tensions of battle, its atmosphere from the merciless sun, and its tone from the dangerous patrols along mine-laden mountain paths.
Sokurov again expands the documentary format to offer a transcendental experience that will stir emotions.
