The film begins with Malcolm's final year of seminary. He is unemployed, uncertain about his future as a minister, unrecognized as "Malcolm" by his parents and without a love in his life. He leaves the safe environment of seminary and sets out on a road trip.
Malcolm travels across the U.S., visiting people with various perspectives about identity, faith, and love: a former high school teacher near Denver; a woman in Cortez whose Nadleeh(two-spirited) Navajo son was murdered while still in high school; in Los Angeles, Calpernia Addams - the subject of the Showtime film, "Soldier's Girl"; a San Francisco police sergeant who gained international attention when he transitioned on the .
